Towing in Rochester, MI

Rochester is about 6 road miles from central Shelby Township, west along 23 Mile. We work out the price on the phone and give it as one total before the truck leaves.

West on 23 Mile

Across Dequindre on 23 Mile: the road into Rochester

Rochester is about 6 road miles from central Shelby Township, and the route is short and simple: west on 23 Mile, which takes the name Avon Road once it crosses Dequindre into Oakland County and passes through a pair of roundabouts, then north on Rochester Road, M-150, which turns into Main Street downtown.

Oakland County calls its mile roads by name, which helps when you tell us where you are. Avon Road is 23 Mile; Walton Boulevard is 24 Mile and goes by University Drive inside the city; Tienken Road is 25 Mile. M-150 follows Rochester Road from M-59 north to downtown, where the same road becomes Main Street.

Tell us what's nearest

  • Downtown - the Main Street block, or the cross street: Second, Third, Fourth, University or Walnut.
  • A parking deck - the East or West Parking Platform, and the level you're on.
  • Rochester Road - your direction and the last cross road; south of the city, M-59's Rochester Road exit is exit 46, in Rochester Hills.
  • The trails - Rochester Municipal Park off Pine Street for the Paint Creek Trail, or the spot where you left the Clinton River Trail.
  • A side street - the street and the nearest corner; the whole city covers about 3.8 square miles, so a corner pins it down.

It's a short haul, which leaves the truck type and the time on scene to shape most of a Rochester total. How we build that one price explains every part, and you hear the number before anything rolls.

Breakdowns and crashes

Emergency towing in Rochester: Main Street (M-150), University Drive and Avon Road

No freeway crosses Rochester's 3.8 square miles. Inside the city the main line is Main Street, the downtown end of M-150, with University Drive among its downtown cross streets and Avon Road meeting Rochester Road on the way in from Shelby Township.

Downtown fills up on a schedule. The farmers market runs Saturdays from May through October, the Hometown Christmas Parade has run since 1951, and the Big Bright Light Show has lit downtown for the holidays since 2006. Stall in that traffic and the first job is being seen: hazards on, and if the car is blocking a lane, call 911.

Rochester runs its own police department and its own 911 dispatch center, whose dispatchers handle police, fire and medical calls. The department's advice is specific: a crash with no injuries isn't a 911 call - use its line, 248-651-9621 - but if you aren't sure which number fits, 911 is right.

M-59 lies outside the city, in Rochester Hills; heading south, Main Street becomes Rochester Road and meets the freeway at exit 46. Broken down on the freeway itself? Dial 911 if you're in a lane, then give us your direction and the nearest exit.

With the car safe, emergency towing from Main Street or University Drive takes it where you say: home, a shop in Rochester or Rochester Hills, or a dealer farther away on the flatbed.

No tow needed

Roadside assistance in Rochester: parking decks, lockouts and dead batteries at the trailhead

Downtown, cars sit for hours in the city's two parking decks - the East and West Parking Platforms, 532 spaces between them - and at 697 meters that run 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. except Sundays and federal holidays. Residents of Pine, Oak, West Third and West Fourth park by permit, which the police department issues at any hour.

A car that only clicks in a deck on a cold night may need nothing more than a jump. The jump pack travels to the car by hand, so the level doesn't matter, and if the engine won't keep running after the jump, the battery or the alternator is the likely cause.

Locked out? The Rochester Police Department offers a free unlocking service for keys locked in a car once you sign a damage liability waiver, and its page notes that some vehicles an officer can't open. If yours is one of them, or you'd rather not wait for an officer, we open it with car-opening tools.

The trailhead lot is another place cars wait for hours. The Paint Creek Trail starts south of Ludlow Street in Rochester and runs 8.9 miles to Lake Orion; its Rochester parking is at Rochester Municipal Park off Pine Street, and the trail is open from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset. Back at a dead car near dusk? Call before the lot empties.

A pothole on a city street ate your tire? Report it through the city's Report a Concern page or to the DPW at 248-651-5165, and we'll fit your spare at the curb or carry the car to a tire shop. Empty tank on Rochester Road? Say gas or diesel. All of it is roadside help in downtown Rochester and the streets around it.

Wheels off the road

Flatbed towing in Rochester: AWD, EVs, low cars and trips past the nearby towns

An all-wheel-drive car, a 4x4, an EV, a lowered car, a classic or a motorcycle goes on a flatbed out of Rochester every time, even for the short run down Rochester Road to a Rochester Hills shop. Behind a wheel-lift, the wheels left on the road keep turning; on the deck, none do.

Longer trips ride the deck whatever drives the wheels: once a trip leaves the nearby towns behind, the flatbed is the only way we haul. That includes a student's car headed home from Oakland University, which has kept a Rochester mailing address since 1958 even though its campus lies in Rochester Hills and Auburn Hills. Tell us the campus lot or street and the destination.

A car from a Main Street crash that won't steer, or one hauled out of a snowbank with a bent wheel, also loads on the deck, pulled up by the winch rather than driven.

Stuck, not broken

Winch-outs in Rochester: snow emergencies, plow ridges and park lots

Rochester's DPW works winter from a written program. Crews are called in at 2 inches and falling so plows are running by 3, and no storm is supposed to pass 4 inches before the plowing schedule starts. Primary routes in each zone go first, so emergency vehicles can get within two blocks of any home; secondary streets follow, and downtown city lots are cleared between 2:30 and 6 a.m.

When a storm runs past 6 inches, the city can declare a snow emergency; parking limits then apply citywide and every vehicle has to come off the snow emergency routes. State law also lets a police agency have a car moved to safekeeping when snow or another emergency makes that necessary for public safety. Check the city's snow and ice page and its plow tracker before leaving a car on the street in a storm.

After the plow goes by, the ridge at the curb is what holds a parked car; we pull from the cleared lane.

That curb ridge is where a parked car gets caught: try to climb it and the car high-centers, the drive wheels lose their grip, and spinning only polishes the snow. A winch-out from a Rochester curb or park lot starts with our truck on cleared pavement and the cable hooked to a solid recovery point; the car is drawn back along the path it took in.

At Rochester Municipal Park and the trail lots we work from the pavement, never from the trail. Our trucks are built for cars, pickups, vans, SUVs and motorcycles; an RV or a box truck full of freight stuck behind a downtown building is a heavy-duty job, and we'll tell you so first.

Who to call

Car towed in Rochester? City police, a release at the station, then the tow lot

Rochester provides its own police, fire and water service, and its police department - 26 full-time employees for a city of 13,035 people at the 2020 Census - is the first call when a car goes missing inside the city.

If the police impounded it, the city's vehicle impoundment page sets out the order: pay the city's administrative release fee at the police station or online, keep the receipt, then bring a valid registration and proof of insurance to the towing company. The company's impound and storage fees are separate, and they're yours to pay.

Taken from a private lot downtown? Under MCL 257.252a, the towing agency has to notify the police agency with jurisdiction before it moves the car, so Rochester police should know where it went. The same section lets you inspect the stored car and take out personal property during the custodian's regular business hours, with no fee for the first visit.

If the state's notice arrives, the Secretary of State's abandoned vehicle answers cover locating the car in e-Services and filing a court petition within 20 days of the notice date if you think the tow or the fees were wrong.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Do you tow in Rochester, and how far away are you?

Yes. Rochester is about 6 road miles from central Shelby Township, the home base of Shelby Township Towing, by way of 23 Mile and Avon Road. You hear one total on the phone, set by the truck, the scene time, the miles and the drop-off, before the truck leaves. Calls are taken at any hour of any day.

I had a fender-bender on Main Street with no injuries - do I call 911?

Rochester's police department asks you not to use 911 for a crash with no injuries; call its line, 248-651-9621, instead. If anyone is hurt, the car is blocking a lane or you aren't sure, 911 is the right call. When the car can't be driven, Shelby Township Towing can take it home or to a shop once the police are done.

My car won't start in a downtown Rochester parking deck - can you help?

Yes. Tell us whether you're in the East or West Parking Platform and on which level. Our driver carries the jump pack to the car and gets it running. If the battery or the alternator is finished, Shelby Township Towing can take the car to a shop in Rochester or Rochester Hills, priced on the call.

I locked my keys in my car in Rochester - should I call the police or you?

Either. The Rochester Police Department offers a free unlocking service at 248-651-9621 after you sign a damage liability waiver, and it says some vehicles an officer can't open. Shelby Township Towing opens cars with car-opening tools at any hour, and the price is given on the call before anyone heads over.

The Rochester police had my car impounded - what are the steps to get it released?

Follow the city's vehicle impoundment steps: pay the city's administrative release fee at the police station or online and keep the receipt, then bring a valid registration and proof of insurance to the towing company holding the car. That company's impound and storage fees are separate. Questions go to the Rochester Police Department at 248-651-9621.

There's a snow emergency in Rochester - where can I leave my car?

Off the snow emergency routes. Under the city's winter maintenance program, a snow emergency can be declared when a storm passes 6 inches; parking restrictions then apply citywide and all vehicles must be moved off those routes. Check the city's snow and ice page or its alerts, and if your car ends up plowed in at the curb, Shelby Township Towing can winch it out.
